CHILD SUPPORT
THE PRACTICE OF FAMILY LAW
Child support is generally paid to a parent with whom a minor child primarily resides. The amount of support to be paid for the support of the minor child is most often based upon a percentage of the net income of the spouse required to pay support. The guideline percentages determined by statute provides as follows:
| Number of Children | Percentage of Supporting Party’s net income |
|---|---|
| 1 | 20% |
| 2 | 28% |
| 3 | 32% |
| 4 | 40% |
| 5 | 45% |
| 6 or more | 50% |
Although the statutory guidelines provide a baseline for the calculation of child support, there are various factors which may result in a deviation from the aforementioned guidelines.
